Market research for small businesses

Before you sign a lease or buy equipment, find out who in your area would buy, who you’d be up against, and what people pay today. We do the research with you and write it up so you can act on it, or hand it to a lender.

WHY IT MATTERS

A good idea in the wrong market is still a hard business

Most owners start with a feeling: nobody around here does this well, or there’s always a line at the place across town. Sometimes the feeling is right. Sometimes there are already four shops within ten miles, or the people who’d want it live forty minutes away, or the going price won’t cover your rent.

Market research turns the feeling into numbers you can check. It won’t decide whether you should start, because that’s your call. It tells you what you’d be walking into, so you decide on evidence instead of hope.

WHAT WE DO

Five steps, two to three weeks

1. Agree the question

What you’re deciding, for which area, and what would change your mind. One page, agreed before we start.

2. Read the area

Population, households, income and the businesses already there, from public sources like the US Census.

3. Map the competition

Who sells what you’d sell, at what price, and what their own customers praise and complain about in public reviews.

4. Talk to customers

Five to ten short conversations with people who’d buy, about how they solve the problem today and what they’d pay.

5. Write it up

A report in plain language with where every number comes from, and a readout call with our recommendation.

Then, your call

Go, narrow the idea, or rethink it. We’ll show you what we’d look at next either way.

WHO IT’S FOR

Founders, and owners adding something new

It fits someone deciding whether to start, an owner opening a second location, or a business adding a new service and wondering if the town will buy it.

It’s less useful if you’re already sure and already committed. Then a business model test campaign with real customers will teach you more.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

And what isn’t

Included: the research, the customer conversations, the written report and the readout call. You’ll need about two hours across the project, plus introductions to anyone you’d like us to talk to.

Not included: paid data subscriptions you’d keep, legal advice on a lease, or a promise about how the business will do. Research describes a market. It can’t guarantee one.

Price: custom, set after your free business assessment.

WHAT YOU’LL KNOW

Answers you can act on

By the end you’ll know roughly how many potential customers live or work in your area, what they spend, who already serves them, and at what prices. You’ll know what those competitors’ customers wish were better, because they say so in public reviews. And you’ll have heard, in their own words, from people who might buy from you.

That’s usually enough to make the next decision with confidence: where to open, who to sell to first, and what to charge.

FAQ

Questions about market research

How is this different from searching online myself?

You can find a lot online. What takes time is putting it together for your exact area, checking it, and talking to real customers. We do that part and tell you what it adds up to.

Can I use the report for a bank loan?

Yes. It’s written so a lender can follow it, and it lists where every number comes from. It pairs well with a business plan if the lender asks for one.

Do you only work in Louisiana?

No. The public data we use covers the whole US, and customer conversations happen by phone or video wherever you are.

What if the research says it’s a bad idea?

Then you’ve saved money you would have spent finding out the hard way. Often it points to a better version: a different place, a narrower customer, or a different price.
